Description

The pot that builds a dense, fibrous root ball instead of a spiral

The Air-Pot is a container engineered to do one job properly: stop roots circling. Its wall is moulded from recycled HDPE into an egg-carton texture of inward and outward pointing cones, so there is no flat surface anywhere inside for a root to run along. Roots are steered outwards to an open hole, meet dry air, and stop — a process called air pruning. The plant answers by pushing out new roots behind the tip, and keeps doing it, so the root ball fills with fine feeder roots rather than one thick spiral.

Key Benefits

  • Air pruning instead of root circling — the tip dehydrates at the hole and branches, over and over
  • A dense, fibrous root mass that takes up water and feed far faster than a spiralled one
  • No root-bound plants and no transplant shock — nothing is wound round the inside of the pot
  • Superb aeration and drainage through the open wall, which makes overwatering much harder
  • Works in soil, coco and hydro, hand watered or on drippers
  • Reusable season after season — recycled HDPE, flat packs down, rebuilds in seconds
  • Colour-coded bases so sizes stay obvious on a busy bench

Root Circling Is Costing You Yield

In a smooth-walled pot the root tip hits the side and turns, then keeps turning. You end up with a root-bound plant — a mat of thick, coiled root against the plastic and very little fine root through the middle of the medium. Uptake slows, growth stalls, and transplanting sets the plant back again. Because an Air-Pot has nowhere for a root to run, that spiral never forms. The same root energy goes into feeder roots spread right through the medium, which is where water, oxygen and nutrient are actually taken up.

How to Use

  • Assemble — roll the wall into a cylinder, line up the cones, and fix with the supplied screws. It sits on its base and comes apart just as easily for storage
  • Fill — use a free-draining medium. Coco, coco-perlite and airy soil mixes all suit it; the open wall means a heavy, water-retentive mix is the only thing that will let you down
  • Water little and often — the wall breathes, so pots dry faster than solid plastic. Drippers or a small, frequent hand-water beat a single soak
  • Expect white root tips at the holes — that is the air pruning working, not a problem
  • Pot on — because nothing is root bound, moving up a size disturbs the plant very little
