Soil and potting mixes

Bagged mixes and improvers.

Mixes differ mainly in how much feed is already in the bag. A light mix starts close to unfed and lets you build up gradually; an all-mix carries several weeks of nutrition. Worm castings and perlite adjust a mix you already have.

Nothing matches all of those filters.

Growing soil for an easier, more forgiving feed schedule

Soil holds a nutrient reserve that coco and hydro media simply do not, which means more forgiveness if you miss a feed or overwater slightly, at the cost of a little less control over exactly what your plants are getting. Canna Terra Professional Soil (£11.95 for 50L) is pre-fertilised and airy enough that seedlings and clones can go straight in without burning, and it is the soil most growers here reach for as a reliable default.

Picking a mix for your stage

Not every soil is right for every plant size. BioBizz Light Mix (from £6.95) is deliberately low in nutrients, built for seedlings, cuttings and the first couple of weeks of veg, where a strong mix would overwhelm young roots. BioBizz All-Mix (from £7.95) carries enough nutrient charge to take a plant through several weeks without supplemental feed. Guanokalong Complete Soil (£14.95) goes further still, built around organic guano inputs for growers running a fully organic feed programme. Add perlite (from £6.95) to any of these if drainage is an issue, particularly in smaller pots that dry out unevenly.

Soil versus coco or hydro

Soil grows tend to need feeding less often but watering with more care, since overwatering is the main way soil grows go wrong. For faster growth with more precise, more frequent feeding, our coco range is the natural step up, and propagation medium covers dedicated seed and cutting starts if you are not sowing straight into a full-size soil pot.
