Hydroponic systems and parts
A hydroponic system feeds the roots a nutrient solution directly, with the plant sitting in an inert medium or straight in the water. The systems here fall into a few families, and our hydroponic systems guide explains how each one works.
Gravity-fed: AutoPot (8.5L pots, or 25L on the XL) and EasyFeed (10L to 30L pots) run from a tank by gravity with no pump, the gentlest way in if you are new or away a lot. Deep water culture: Alien RDWC systems from 4 to 36 pots, plus Oxypot and Nutriculture units, keep the roots in oxygenated solution. Flood and drain, and drip: the IWS Trident and Autodrain, and Top Spin dripper kits.
Then the parts that keep a system running: air pumps from Hailea, BOYU and Charles Austen; water pumps from NEWA, AquaKing, Hailea and Sicce; collapsible tanks from FlexiTank and Aqualine; reverse osmosis units from GrowMax and Hydro-Logic; and TrolMaster controllers.
Choosing a system
Gravity-fed systems keep electrics out of the root zone and have little to go wrong. DWC and RDWC give the most direct control of the roots but ask more of you, mainly water temperature and oxygen; our root zone guide covers both. Read the water pump guide before sizing a pump, and the pH guide before your first feed.
