Description

Timed drip feeding for a full grow space from one 150-litre tank

The Nutriculture Origin XXL, sold for years as the Wilma XXL, is a complete recirculating drip irrigation system that gives you the accuracy of active hydroponics with the familiarity of growing in pots. Each pot sits in its own moulded slot on a 115 x 115 cm tray, the tray sits over a 150-litre nutrient tank, and a submersible pump switched by a timer feeds every pot through its own dripper. Solution works down through the growing medium, drains back into the tank and draws fresh air into the root zone as it goes. Feeding little and often like this avoids the dry-then-sodden cycle of hand watering that starves roots of oxygen and leaves nutrient uptake patchy, so plants grow on evenly with strong root development. It takes clay pebbles, coco, soil or rockwool, and because the pots are independent of one another you can move, turn or replace a plant without disturbing the rest.

Choose Your Pot Layout

  • 5 x 25L Pots: four corner pots and one in the centre, for a few big, long-season plants with plenty of root room.
  • 8 x 18L Pots: eight 18-litre pots, more room for each plant than the nine-pot layout.
  • 9 x 18L Pots: a three-by-three grid, the middle ground between plant numbers and pot volume.
  • 16 x 11L Pots: a four-by-four grid for a dense canopy of smaller plants.
  • 20 x 6L Pots: twenty small pots, the most plants any Origin tray takes.

What's Included

  • 150-litre tank
  • XXL top tray, 115 x 115 cm, moulded for the chosen pot layout
  • Pots for every slot
  • Submersible pump
  • Delivery system: distribution pipe with a nutrient mixing tap, drip lines, blue flood drippers and black arrow drippers

Key Benefits

  • Little-and-often feeding on a timer, so roots get water, nutrients and oxygen in balance and are never over or underfed
  • One 150-litre tank to mix, check and top up for the whole system, roughly every couple of days
  • Two dripper types supplied: blue flood drippers (about 40 L/h) for clay pebbles and black arrow drippers (2 L/h) for coco, soil and rockwool
  • Mixing tap: open it after a nutrient change and run the pump for a couple of minutes to stir the whole tank
  • Anti-leak design: pots fit snugly into sized slots on a tray that sits over the reservoir
  • Low profile on a 115 x 115 cm footprint, leaving the height of the room for the plants

How to Use

  • Set up: stand the tank level, sit the tray on top, drop the pots into their slots and fit the pump and delivery system as the instructions show.
  • Drippers: fit the blue flood drippers for clay pebbles and treat the system as recirculating; fit the black arrow drippers for coco, soil or rockwool and aim to keep run-off low.
  • Mix: fill the tank, add your nutrients, then open the tap and run the pump for a couple of minutes so the solution is evenly mixed before setting EC and a pH of 5.5-6.2.
  • Timer: plug the pump into an irrigation or segmental timer (not included). Start young plants on 2 or 3 short feeds a day across the lights-on period and add feeds as they grow; clay pebbles need more frequent feeds than coco or soil.
  • Keep drippers clear: use a drip-line cleaner such as House & Garden Drip Clean from the first fill to stop salts building up in the drippers.
  • Maintain: top the tank up every couple of days and refresh the solution on your nutrient's schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the Origin XXL fit in a 120 x 120 cm grow tent?

The tray is 115 x 115 cm, which leaves only about 2.5 cm a side in a 120 x 120 cm tent, so measure the inside of your tent floor first. A 150 x 150 cm tent gives room to reach the tap and the drippers.

Is the Origin the same system as the Wilma?

Yes. Nutriculture renamed its Wilma range Origin; it is the same pots-on-a-tray-over-a-tank drip system, and the Origin XXL is the former Wilma XXL.

Which drippers should I use?

Blue flood drippers for clay pebbles, which drain freely and like frequent feeds, and black arrow drippers at 2 L/h for coco, soil, mixed media and rockwool, where you want to keep run-off to a minimum. Both types come in the kit.

Do I need anything else to run it?

A timer for the pump, your nutrients and growing medium, and a pH and EC meter to check the tank. A drip-line cleaner from day one helps keep the drippers flowing.
