Dissolved oxygen is what keeps roots alive in standing water, and it drops fast in a warm reservoir. An air pump pushing air through a stone keeps the water agitated and oxygen-rich, which matters most in deep water culture buckets, where roots hang directly in solution with no medium to hold air pockets. Sizing a pump to your setup
As a rough rule, match litres-per-hour output to reservoir size rather than buying the cheapest pump and hoping. An undersized pump barely ripples the water and oxygen levels stay low. Split larger reservoirs across multiple air stones using a plastic manifold (from £2.50) rather than one stone working overtime, and run 4mm air line (from £0.30) from pump to stone with as few kinks as possible, since a pinched line quietly halves your output. A golf ball air stone (£1.50) is the standard choice for most single-bucket DWC systems.
Air pumps sit outside the tent, ideally somewhere quiet, and run continuously rather than on a timer.
