Coco coir sits between soil and full hydro: it drains fast enough that you will not drown roots, but holds enough structure and moisture that timing is not as brutal as pure hydro media. Canna Coco Professional Plus (£14.95) is the benchmark bag here, pre-buffered and washed so it is ready to use straight from the pack rather than needing a rinse cycle first. Gold Label HydroCoco 60/40 Mix (£13.95) blends coco with clay pebbles for growers who want more air in the root zone, and a bag of perlite (from £6.95) or ready-mixed Plagron Coco Perlite 70/30 (£13.75) opens up drainage further for anyone hand-watering more than once a day.
Coco needs coco-specific feed, every time
This is the one that catches new coco growers out: standard soil or hydro nutrients are not calibrated for coco's cation exchange, and running them without a coco-specific base and added CalMag reliably leads to calcium and magnesium deficiencies within a couple of weeks. Feed a coco-labelled nutrient range and keep EC and pH in check from day one rather than firefighting yellowing leaves later. Our feeding in coco guide walks through the EC and pH targets to run.
Sizing and buying advice
A 50L bag comfortably fills two to three 15L pots depending on how you top up, and buying multiples works out cheaper per litre than one-off bags if you are running more than a couple of plants. Coco drains too freely to hold nutrient reserve like soil does, so expect to feed more often, little and often, rather than the deeper, less frequent watering a soil grow gets away with.
