Carbon filters for grow tents
A carbon filter scrubs odour out of the air before it leaves your tent — it only works if every bit of exhaust air passes through it, which is why it hangs first in the chain, inside the tent, before the fan. Skip it or undersize it and smell leaks out through the extraction, however good your fan is.

Sizing a filter to your fan
Two rules: match the diameter to your extractor fan (a 6" fan needs a 6" filter, same flange, no reducers), and check the filter's rated m³/h is equal to or higher than the fan's — if the filter is the bottleneck, the fan works harder, gets louder, and odour scrubbing suffers. Carbon saturates after roughly 12–18 months of continuous running; if a filter's older than that and smell is creeping through, replace it before you troubleshoot anything else.
