Description

Odour-Free Extraction from a Long-Life Activated Carbon Filter

The Mountain Air Carbon Filter scrubs smell out of the air your extractor fan pulls from a grow tent or grow room. Exhaust air is drawn through a bed of activated carbon packed inside a perforated metal body, and odour molecules are trapped by adsorption: they cling to the carbon's vast internal surface rather than soaking into it, so the carbon does not swell or clog the way a dust filter does. Mountain Air use a low-density, high-strength carbon that keeps resistance low, so the fan keeps moving air while the filter does its job. Each size is rated for a set airflow and named by its flange and length, which makes pairing it with the right inline fan and ducting straightforward.

Key Benefits

  • Proper odour control – activated carbon adsorbs smell from the exhaust air before it leaves the room.
  • Low resistance, strong airflow – low-density carbon lets the fan breathe, from 575 m³/h on the compact 0620 up to 4500 m³/h on the 1240XL.
  • Later breakthrough – Mountain Air's carbon holds on to odour molecules for longer, so the exhaust stays clean for longer before a new filter is due.
  • Size-coded models – the model number gives the flange and length in inches, so the 0820 is an 8-inch filter about 20 inches (500mm) long.
  • L and XL high-capacity versions – the 1240L and 1240XL keep the 315mm flange and 1000mm length but use a wider body holding more carbon, rated 3500 and 4500 m³/h.
  • Little to maintain – no moving parts and nothing to refill; hang it, duct it and let it work.
  • Standard duct fit – a metal flange sized to standard metric ducting and clamps.

Odour Escaping With the Exhaust Air

Every extraction system sends the room's air somewhere, and with it goes the smell of flowering plants, organic feeds, compost teas and damp growing media. A carbon filter only works if it can catch odour as fast as it arrives: an undersized or worn-out filter lets smell slip through, while one that chokes the fan cuts airflow, so heat and humidity build up around the plants and mould gets a foothold. Matching a quality filter to your fan keeps the exhaust clean without strangling the ventilation your grow room climate depends on.

How to Use

  • Choose the size: match the flange to your fan and ducting, then pick a filter rated for at least the airflow your fan actually moves.
  • Mount it high: warm, smelly air gathers near the roof, so hang the filter in the top of the tent or room, or stand it on a filter stand.
  • Pull air through it: connect the flange to the fan's inlet so the fan draws air through the carbon. Mountain Air's selection guide covers mixed-flow and centrifugal inline fans.
  • Seal every joint: clamp the ducting to the flange so no air can bypass the carbon.
  • Keep humidity in check: very damp air shortens carbon life, so run the extraction hard enough to hold your target humidity.
  • Replace when it is spent: once smell starts reaching the exhaust, the carbon is saturated and the filter is due for replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which size do I need?

Match the flange to your fan's duct size, then check the filter's rated airflow is at least what the fan delivers through your ducting. Mountain Air's own EC 1030 Air Kit, for example, pairs the 1030 (1870 m³/h) with the 250mm EC Whisper fan (1808 m³/h).

What do the model numbers mean?

The first two digits are the flange diameter in inches and the last two the approximate length in inches: 0620 is 6" × 500mm, 0820 is 8" × 500mm, 0840 is 8" × 1000mm, 1030 is 10" × 800mm, 1040 is 10" × 1000mm, 1230 is 12" × 800mm and 1240 is 12" × 1000mm.

What is the difference between the 1240, 1240L and 1240XL?

All three have a 315mm (12") flange and a 1000mm body. The 1240's body is 415mm across and rated 2870 m³/h; the 1240L widens it to 450mm for 3500 m³/h and the 1240XL to 500mm for 4500 m³/h. The wider body holds more carbon, so air passes through it more slowly. HydroGarden, Mountain Air's UK distributor, advises choosing a filter rated above what your extraction actually delivers, which keeps odour capture complete and the carbon working for longer – so the L or XL suits a powerful 315mm fan or a room where you want the longest life from the filter.

Which fans can I use with it?

Mountain Air's selection guide covers mixed-flow and centrifugal inline fans. Overlay the fan's pressure curve on the filter's pressure-drop curve and the crossing point gives the real airflow of the pair. Any make with the same duct size will fit, including Mountain Air's own EC Whisper fans.

How long will the carbon last?

That depends on hours run, humidity and how much odour the room produces. Mountain Air's carbon holds odour molecules for longer than typical budget carbon, so breakthrough comes later; when smell starts to reach the exhaust, fit a new filter.
