Rooting cubes and plugs

Where a start takes root.

A cube holds a seed or a cutting steady while roots form, then goes straight into the next pot or slab. Choose by material - mineral wool or organic plug - and by hole size: small for seed, large for a cutting stem.

Nothing matches all of those filters.

Rooting cubes for clean, consistent starts

Grodan propagation cubes (£11.95) are the rockwool standard — sterile, consistent, and easy to keep at the right moisture level once you know the routine, though they hold water differently to soil so overwatering a new grower's first tray is common. Root Riot (from £6.95) organic cubes are the gentler alternative, made from composted materials rather than mineral wool, and forgive a slightly wetter regime better than rockwool does.

Eazy Plug cubes (from £11.95) are coco-based, which suits anyone potting cuttings straight into a coco medium afterwards since the root environment doesn't change at transplant. Grodan transplanting cubes (from £3.50) are the next size up for moving a rooted cutting on before it goes into a full pot, and Plug Life Peatmix trays (£14.95, 104-cell) suit anyone starting a large batch of seeds rather than clones.

Buying advice

Match the cube type to what you're potting into afterwards where you can — a coco cube into coco, rockwool into rockwool or hydro — since matching media at transplant reduces root shock.
