Spent Carbon Lets Chlorine Back Into the Root Zone
A saturated carbon block lets chlorine straight through to your tank, and GrowMax are blunt about what it does there: it damages roots directly and kills the beneficial micro-organisms in the growing medium, mycorrhizae and Trichoderma included. The result is weaker root development and patchy nutrient uptake while the filter still looks as if it is working.
How to Use
- Turn off the supply and release the pressure, then unscrew both housings with the spanner supplied with the Garden Grow.
- Fit the sediment filter first in the flow and the carbon block second, check the O-rings and refit the housings.
- Run water to waste for about 5 minutes, until it runs clear, before filling your tank.
- Change both every 27,000 litres of filtered water, and sooner if outlet pressure drops early – a clogged sediment filter is the usual cause.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will this pack fit my Eco Grow or Power Grow?
No. GrowMax make a separate pack for each housing size: the Eco Grow and the smaller RO units take 10-inch cartridges (the GrowMax 10 Inch Replacement Filter Pack), and the Super Grow and Pro Grow have packs of their own. This one fits the Garden Grow's 20-inch housings only.
Can I change just the carbon block?
GrowMax rate both cartridges for the same 27,000 litres and sell them as a matched pair, so they are normally changed together. On a dirty supply the sediment filter clogs first – if outlet pressure drops well before the carbon is due, that is the cartridge to look at.
Will the Garden Grow lower the EC of my tap water?
No. It is a sediment and carbon filter: it strips chlorine and organic contaminants but leaves dissolved minerals in the water, so the EC stays close to your tap reading. To bring EC down you need a reverse osmosis unit.
