Description
Five Bacillus strains to put the root zone to work
Hygroben from the makers of Hygrozyme is a microbial root inoculant built from five Bacillus species chosen because they work together: Bacillus licheniformis, B. subtilis, B. pumilus, B. amyloliquefaciens and B. megaterium. Dosed once a week at 1ml per litre, the bacteria colonise the roots and make more nutrients available to the plant through nitrogen fixation, phosphate solubilisation and iron-gathering siderophores. Every ingredient is natural, it works in soil, coco, rockwool and hydroponics, and it suits vegetables, ornamentals and flowering plants alike. It is designed to run alongside Hygrozyme, whose enzymes break down dead root matter and feed the microbes.
Key Benefits
- Five compatible Bacillus species - 100 million CFU/ml each of B. licheniformis and B. subtilis, 50 million CFU/ml each of the other three
- Better nutrient availability - nitrogen fixation, phosphate solubilisation and siderophore production around the roots
- More root, more yield - in the maker's third-party trials, Hygroben used with Hygrozyme raised flower yield by up to 30%
- Once-a-week dosing - 1-2ml per litre, as a drench or through drip lines
- Any medium - soil, coco, rockwool and recirculating or run-to-waste hydro
- Made to pair with Hygrozyme - the enzymes feed the microbes in the same tank
Is your root zone short of beneficial life?
Fresh coco, stonewool and clean hydroponic systems start with very little microbial life around the roots, and sterile media stay that way unless something is added. Without it, nutrient uptake depends only on what is already dissolved in the feed. Inoculating with beneficial Bacillus builds an active rhizosphere early, supporting root development and helping the plant draw nitrogen, phosphorus and iron from the medium and the feed.
How to Use
- Rate: 1ml per litre of water or nutrient solution (up to 2ml per litre), once a week
- Application: as a drench to the root zone or fed through drip lines
- When: from cuttings and seedlings through vegetative growth and flowering; stop for the final two weeks of flowering
- Mixing: use the mixed solution within 24 hours and keep the mix between pH 5.5 and 7
- Storage: use within 4 months of opening
- With Hygrozyme: add both to the same tank - Hygrozyme's enzymes feed the microbes

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Hygroben with Hygrozyme?
Yes - they are made to be used together. Hygrozyme's enzymes break down dead root matter and feed the Bacillus in Hygroben; add both to the same tank at their normal rates.
Can I use hydrogen peroxide with Hygroben?
Only at a low rate. Hygrozyme say Hygroben can be used with hydrogen peroxide at no more than 2ml per US gallon, about 0.5ml per litre. Hygroben is live bacteria, so keep stronger sterilising treatments out of the solution you dose it into.
Does it work in hydroponics as well as soil?
Yes. Hygrozyme state it is effective in all growing media; in recirculating systems dose the reservoir once a week, and in run-to-waste systems feed it through the drip lines.
Why only once a week?
Once the bacteria have colonised the roots they keep multiplying between doses. The maker's schedule tops them up weekly at 1ml per litre rather than at every feed.
