Description

Chitosan that switches on a plant's own defences

HyShield from Hygrozyme is a liquid plant biostimulant made with high-molecular-weight chitosan, a natural compound extracted from recycled crab shells. Plant cell walls carry receptors that recognise chitosan, so each dose prompts the plant's natural defence responses as though it were under attack, without any damage being done. The maker reports thicker, stronger stalks, reduced transpiration and better resilience to heat, cold and drought stress, with a protective layer on roots and leaves that builds with every application. It is used as a foliar spray through vegetative growth and a root drench in flower, in any growing medium, alongside your normal feed.

Key Benefits

  • Natural chitosan - high molecular weight for slow, long-lasting action; clear and odourless
  • Stress resilience - lower transpiration helps plants ride out high heat, cold nights and dry spells
  • Thicker stalks - stronger stems to carry a heavier canopy
  • Flower development - the maker reports better flower development and higher essential oil production
  • Every medium, every stage - soil, coco, rockwool and hydro, from seed or cutting to flowering
  • Plays well with others - compatible with water-soluble nutrients, beneficial microbes and hydrogen peroxide

Heat stress, wilting and weak stems

Hot lights, a warm room, cold nights or a missed watering can push plants to lose water faster than the roots replace it, and the result is wilting, stalled growth and stems that struggle to hold the canopy. HyShield's chitosan lowers transpiration and primes the plant's own defences, so it copes better with environmental stress and builds sturdier stems for flowering.

How to Use

  • Seedlings and cuttings: 1ml per litre as a drench, or soak the propagation plugs
  • Vegetative, week 1: 1ml per litre as a foliar spray, once a week, lights off
  • Vegetative, week 2 onwards: 5ml per litre as a foliar spray, once a week, lights off
  • Flowering: 5ml per litre as a root drench, once a week; spray the stalks rather than the flowers
  • Mixing: do a small jar test with your nutrients first - if they congeal, apply HyShield on plain-water days. Add Hygrozyme before HyShield; aim for about pH 5.8
  • Storage: keep cool and dry

Feed Chart
HyShield · all media · foliar spray in vegetative growth, root drench in flowering, once a week
Stage Per 1 L Per 10 L
Seedlings and cuttings (drench or plug soak) 1 ml 10 ml
Vegetative, week 1 (foliar spray) 1 ml 10 ml
Vegetative, week 2 onwards (foliar spray) 5 ml 50 ml
Flowering (root drench) 5 ml 50 ml
Note — Hygrozyme's own technical sheet: once a week, foliar sprays with the lights off. Jar-test with your nutrients first, add Hygrozyme before HyShield, and aim for about pH 5.8. Set EC first, then adjust pH, once every base nutrient and additive is in the tank.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is HyShield a fertiliser?

No. It carries no nutrients to replace your feed; keep to your normal nutrient programme and add HyShield on top as the schedule shows.

Will it mix with my nutrients?

It is compatible with water-soluble nutrients, but the maker recommends a jar test first. If the mix congeals, apply HyShield on its own as a foliar spray or on plain-water days.

Can I use it with beneficial microbes or hydrogen peroxide?

Yes. Hygrozyme state HyShield is compatible with beneficial microbes and with hydrogen peroxide, and it can be drenched together with Hygrozyme.

Can I spray it on the flowers?

Once plants are flowering the maker recommends spraying the stalks and applying the rest as a root drench, rather than spraying the flowers themselves.
