The sensor that turns an SMS Smart Controller into a reactive fan speed system

This 3m NTC temperature probe is the sensing half of the SMS Smart Controller 6.5A Mk2 fan speed control system, plugging straight into the controller to give it live temperature data from inside the grow space. On its own, the Smart Controller is a fixed-percentage fan speed dial; with this probe fitted, it becomes a genuinely reactive system that adjusts fan speed automatically to hold a set target temperature rather than requiring the grower to keep nudging a dial by hand.

Once wired in, the probe should hang in the centre of the grow room, away from the direct airflow of any fan, since a reading taken in moving air will not reflect the true ambient temperature and will cause the controller to under- or over-react. After power-up, the Smart Controller takes 5-10 minutes to scan the room and establish a baseline before it begins actively regulating fan speed against the target temperature. The SMS Smart Controller works across 60 individual fan speed steps, which is a considerably finer level of control than a basic potentiometer speed controller, so the fan runs only as hard as it needs to at any given moment. That has a direct knock-on benefit for noise levels and for extending the working life of the fan itself, since it spends less time running flat out unnecessarily.
