Description

A Warm 3100K Ceramic Metal Halide Lamp on a Standard E40 Cap

The Adjust-A-Wing Hellion 315W 3100K CMH Lamp is a single-ended ceramic metal halide grow lamp from the Adjust-A-Wings Hellion range. It screws into an ordinary E40 (mogul) holder instead of the PGZ18 base most 315W CDM lamps use, so it runs in a standard reflector. It produces 562 µmol/s of light at 1.78 µmol/J, with a warm, red-weighted 3100K spectrum - the colour temperature growers pick for flowering and fruiting. One lamp covers an optimal 0.8 x 1.2 m in flower, 1 x 1 m as an alternative, or 1.2 x 1.2 m for vegetative growth and mother plants.

Key Benefits

  • 562 µmol/s PPF from 315W - a photon efficiency of 1.78 µmol/J
  • 3100K warm spectrum - red-weighted for flowering, with output right across the PAR range
  • E40 single-ended cap - fits standard E40 lamp holders and reflectors, including the Adjust-A-Wing range
  • 12,000-hour rated life - the maker suggests a change every 12 to 18 months at 18 hours a day
  • Burns horizontal or vertical - in open or closed fixtures
  • True colour rendering - CRI 84, so leaves look natural when you check plant health

Why Choose a 3100K CMH Over HPS?

A high pressure sodium lamp puts most of its output into a narrow yellow-orange band. A ceramic metal halide arc tube produces a much fuller spectrum, with blue and deep red alongside the yellow, so plants tend to grow more compact with less excessive stretch, and the light is natural enough to spot a deficiency or pest by eye. The 3100K version leans warmer than the 4200K daylight lamp, putting more of its energy into the red that drives flowering, while 315W keeps heat and power draw modest for a tent of around a metre square.

How to Use

  • Ballast: run it only on a 315W ballast rated for CMH/CDM lamps - an HPS ballast will not drive it correctly
  • Fitting: with the power off and the holder cool, screw it firmly into an E40 holder; avoid touching the glass with bare hands
  • Height: hang it 45 to 75 cm above the canopy
  • New lamp: run it at full rated power for the first 24 hours before dimming, and leave at least 20 seconds between dimming changes
  • Safety: CMH lamps emit UV - wear UV-rated eye protection when working under it
  • Replacement: every 12 to 18 months at 18 hours a day; it contains mercury, so take spent lamps to a recycling point

Frequently Asked Questions

Will it run on my HPS ballast?

No. A ceramic metal halide lamp needs a 315W ballast rated for CMH or CDM lamps; an HPS ballast does not supply the right ignition and running conditions.

Should I choose 3100K or 4200K?

3100K is the warmer, red-weighted lamp most growers use for flowering and fruiting. 4200K is cooler and bluer for vegetative growth and mother plants. This listing is the 3100K lamp.

Will it fit a PGZ18 CDM fixture?

No. This lamp has a standard E40 screw cap, so it fits E40 holders. Fixtures built for PGZ18 lamps, such as the Philips 315W CDM, need a lamp with that base.

When should I replace it?

Adjust-A-Wings recommend a new lamp every 12 to 18 months at 18 hours a day. Output falls gradually long before a lamp fails, so change it on schedule rather than waiting for it to go out.
