Description
Quiet, Stepped Speed Control for Single-Speed Isomax and Max-Fan Extractors
The Can-Fan Satellite 4A is a stepped transformer speed controller for Can-Fan's single-speed AC fans — the Isomax and Max-Fan ranges. Rather than chopping the mains the way a cheap electronic controller does, it lowers the voltage in six fixed steps, so the fan slows down without the motor hum and vibration that make a reduced-speed fan noisier than it should be. One unit runs one or two fans up to 4A in total, for extraction or intake, and a jack connection links it to Can-Fan's EC controllers so an AC fan can follow room conditions automatically.
Key Benefits
- Six-step transformer control — standby, steps 1 to 6 and an auto EC position on one dial
- Quiet at every step: transformer control avoids the hum and vibration of chopped-mains speed control
- Runs one or two fans up to 4A combined, for extraction or intake air
- Jack connection to Can-Fan's EC controllers — with the Q-Max EC LCD controller an AC fan gains day/night temperature and humidity targets, hysteresis, minimum and maximum speed and negative pressure
- Fused, switched unit with an on/off switch and a row of step indicator lights
- Kit option with the Can-Fan EC Fan Controller for temperature-led speed control from three dials and a probe, with no LCD controller needed
Fan Too Loud, or Too Strong for the Room?
A single-speed extractor running flat out all day pulls more air than most rooms need for most of the cycle: it strips humidity from young plants, drags in cold air in winter and makes more noise than it has to. Dropping the speed with a cheap controller often trades that for a buzzing motor. A stepped transformer gives a clean, lower voltage at each step, so you can match airflow to the room's heat and moisture load — and let a Can-Fan EC controller move between steps for you as the temperature changes.
How to Use
- Check the fans' combined current is 4A or less — it is printed on each fan's label (a 10-inch Isomax 1,480m³/h draws 0.9A, a 12-inch 3,260m³/h draws 3.2A).
- Mount the Satellite on a wall outside the tent, plug the fan or fans into its intake and outtake outlets and connect it to the mains. The outlets are European Schuko-type sockets, so a fan fitted with a UK three-pin plug needs a European plug fitted to its lead by a competent electrician.
- For manual control, switch on and turn the dial from standby through steps 1 to 6 until the airflow suits the room.
- For automatic control, set the dial to auto EC and connect the Can-Fan EC Fan Controller (in the kit) or the Q-Max EC LCD Fan Controller with its jack lead; the controller then picks the step from the probe readings.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which fans can the Satellite 4A run?
Can-Fan's single-speed AC fans — the Isomax and Max-Fan ranges — one or two at a time, up to 4A combined. Two 10-inch Isomax 1,480m³/h fans (0.9A each) or one 12-inch Isomax 3,260m³/h (3.2A) are within the limit; the 14-inch Isomax (5.2A) is not.
Does it work with EC fans?
No. The Satellite controls AC fans. Can-Fan's EC fans, such as the Q-Max EC, connect straight to an EC controller and do not need a transformer.
What does the EC Fan Controller in the kit add?
Automatic, temperature-led control. You set a target temperature and minimum and maximum speeds on its three dials; with the Satellite on auto EC, the fan steps up as the room warms and back down as it cools. Without it, the Satellite runs at whichever step you dial in, or under the Q-Max EC LCD controller if you have one.
Will a fan with a UK plug fit the outlets?
Not directly. The two fan outlets on the back of the Satellite are European Schuko-type sockets with flip covers, as Can-Fan fit them, so a fan with a UK three-pin plug needs a European plug fitted to its lead by a competent electrician. Can-Fan fans supplied with a European plug go straight in.
