Description

A sticky collar that catches gnats where they breed

HYP Lockdown Pads are round, water-resistant yellow sticky pads that sit on the surface of the pot around the base of the plant. The bright yellow draws in fungus gnats, thrips, spider mites, leaf miners, aphids, whitefly and fruit flies, and the adhesive holds them so you can see exactly what is in your grow before choosing a treatment. Each pad has a slit so it fits around an established stem, laid flat or formed into a cone, and its coated surface also keeps spray drift and debris off the growing medium. There is no pesticide and no odour, nothing that affects the air, the medium or the water. The 30cm (12in) pads suit containers of about 8 litres (2 US gallons) and larger, in soil, coco or hydro.

Key Benefits

  • Pesticide-free monitoring - identify the pest first, then choose the right treatment
  • Catches what comes out of the medium - fungus gnats and other insects emerging from the root zone
  • Water resistant and long lasting - you can water straight onto the pad
  • Covers the base of the plant - helps keep algae and debris off the surface of the medium and slows evaporation
  • Flexible fitting - flat, cone up or cone down, at any stage of growth

Fungus gnats and the pests you cannot see yet

Fungus gnat larvae live in the top few centimetres of damp compost and coco, feeding on organic matter and fine roots, while the adults hover around the pots. Thrips, whitefly and aphids are often present for days before leaf damage shows. A sticky pad at the base of each plant gives an early, honest count of what is there, and traps adults before they lay the next generation.

How to Use

  • Flat: lay the pad on the medium, adhesive side up or down, and peel off the release film
  • Cone up: overlap the slit to form a cone rising towards the stem - this keeps hand-watering away from the stem while the pad keeps catching insects
  • Cone down: form a cone sloping down to the stem with the adhesive facing inwards to catch insects emerging from the root zone; leaves room for drippers and hand watering
  • Check regularly: look at the pads as part of your routine and replace them once the surface is covered
