How to Keep Your Grow Tent Cool in Summer (Without an AC Unit)

Tent hitting 32 °C every afternoon? You're not alone — a grow tent typically runs 5–8 °C above the room it sits in, so a summer heatwave turns "warm" into "plants shutting down". The good news: most tents can be brought back into range without buying an air conditioner. Here's the target, the free fixes, and the kit that does the rest.

What temperature are you actually aiming for?

Measure at canopy height, lights on — not at the floor and not on the tent wall. These are the ranges that keep plants growing rather than coping:

What heat actually does to your grow

Above ~30 °C plants close their stomata to save water, so growth simply stops — you'll see drooping in the afternoon, stretched airy growth, and thirsty coco that dries out in hours. Sustained heat late in flower also cooks quality. Free fixes first — do these today

Fix Why it works
Run lights at night The single biggest win. Your light is the tent's main heater — schedule it 8pm–8am so it only runs when the intake air is 5–10 °C cooler. Off-peak electricity is a bonus.
Shorten the duct run Every bend and every slack metre of ducting robs extraction power. Pull the run tight, straighten it, and dump the hot air outside the grow room — venting into the same room just recirculates heat back to your intake.
Gear out of the tent LED drivers and ballasts pump out heat 24/7. Mount them outside the tent and you remove a heater from the smallest, hottest box in the house.
Raise & dim the light On 30 °C+ days, lift the light a little and pull the dimmer back 10–20%. You lose a sliver of intensity; the canopy loses several degrees of radiant heat.
Cool the supply air Your tent can never be cooler than the air it breathes. Open the grow-room door and a window at night, draw intake air from a hallway or north-facing room, and keep direct sun off the tent itself.

The rule that explains everything

Extraction can only pull your tent down towards the temperature of the intake air — never below it. If the room feeding your tent is 28 °C, no fan on earth gets the tent under 28 °C. That's why "lights on at night" beats any upgrade: at 3am your intake air might be 17 °C instead of 28 °C.

Move more air

In summer you want the tent's full volume of air exchanged roughly every minute, with a gentle breeze rippling every leaf. Let a controller do the work

A heatwave doesn't wait for you to get home. A digital fan controller with a temperature probe ramps an EC fan up as the tent warms and back down at night — your tent holds its target while you're at work. Running an older AC fan? A speed controller lets you turn it up for summer without the hum. And spend a tenner on a min/max thermo-hygrometer: the max reading tells you what actually happened at 3pm. What temperature is too hot for a grow tent?

Above 30 °C at canopy height most plants stop growing efficiently — stomata close, water uptake spikes and growth stalls. Occasional brief peaks won't kill a healthy plant, but daily afternoons above 30 °C will cost you noticeable growth, and sustained heat in late flower costs quality. Aim for 22–28 °C depending on stage.

Should I run my grow lights at night in summer?

Yes — it's the single most effective free fix. Schedule lights on from roughly 8pm to 8am so the tent's main heat source only runs when intake air is coolest. Plants don't care which 12 (or 18) hours they get, as long as the cycle is consistent. Switch over by extending one dark period, not by clipping a light period short.

Will a bigger extractor fan make my tent cooler than the room?

No. Extraction replaces tent air with room air, so the tent can only ever approach the intake temperature — never go below it. A bigger or smarter fan closes the gap between tent and room (and does it quietly); getting cooler than that means cooler intake air: night running, drawing from a cooler room, or air conditioning.

Do LED grow lights run cooler than HPS?

For the same light output, yes — LEDs put roughly 30–50% less heat into the tent and none of it as radiant heat beating down on the canopy, which is why LED canopies tolerate slightly higher air temps. Can I just leave the tent door open on hot days?

In veg, as an emergency measure, fine. In flower it's risky: you break the light-proof dark period (a recipe for stress and hermaphroditism) and you short-circuit the bottom-to-top air path your extractor relies on. Fix the intake, the extraction and the light schedule instead — the door stays zipped.
