The right medium for seeds and cuttings
Propagation medium isn't just a smaller version of your main growing medium — it needs to hold moisture evenly around a root system that doesn't exist yet, without waterlogging or drying out between checks. Grodan rockwool cubes (£11.95) are the most consistent option, holding a predictable amount of water and air, though they need a slightly different watering rhythm to soil-based growers if you're used to one.
Root Riot organic cubes (from £6.95) and Plug Life peatmix trays (£14.95, 104-cell) are gentler, more forgiving media for anyone who'd rather not learn rockwool's quirks, and suit seed starting as well as cuttings. Eazy Plug (from £11.95) is coco-based, which makes it the natural choice if your finished grow will be in coco — see our coco feeding guide for what comes after transplant.
Buying advice
Whatever medium you choose, match it to your final growing medium where practical — moving a cutting from rockwool into soil, or from peat into coco, works fine but adds one more adjustment period a plant has to get through. Free UK delivery over £50, next-day available.
