Best NFT Hydroponic Systems: 2026 Buying Guide
Share
An NFT system runs a thin film of nutrient solution over bare roots, day and night, from a tank under the tray. Choose the kit that fits your floor: the Gro-Tank GT090 fills a 1m tent, the GT100 a 1.2m tent and the slim GT604 runs down a 2.4m tent. For a first try on a shelf or in a small tent, the GT205 is the cheapest way in.
The best NFT hydroponic systems
Nutriculture Gro-Tank GT090
£128.99
A square kit made to fill a 1m x 1m tent, over a 70-litre tank that needs topping up less often.
- 2 to 5 plants
- 90 x 90 x 30cm
- 70-litre tank
- No timer needed
- The tray simply rests on the tank: no nuts and bolts
- A Correx top plate keeps light off the roots
Know before you buyThe 90 x 90cm base needs a tent of at least 1m x 1m. At 30cm it also stands a little taller than the other Gro-Tanks here.

Nutriculture Gro-Tank GT205
£58.90
The smallest and cheapest Gro-Tank: a simple first NFT kit for a small tent, a cupboard or a bench.
- 1 to 3 plants
- 69.5 x 38.5 x 18.5cm
- 20-litre tank
- No timer needed
- A small tank that is quick to mix, check and change
- An air line on the pump draws extra oxygen into the solution
Know before you buyA 20-litre tank drinks down and drifts faster than a big one, so check the level, EC and pH more often, especially in a warm tent.

Nutriculture Gro-Tank GT100
£185.00
The most plants from a single Gro-Tank tray in a 1.2 x 1.2m tent, over a 100-litre tank.
- 4 to 9 plants
- 120 x 106 x 22cm
- 100-litre tank
- pH 5.5 to 6.0
- The biggest tank of the Gro-Tank kits here, so the solution stays steadier between checks
- Correx cover, pump and capillary spreader matting all included
Know before you buyAt 120 x 106cm it covers most of a 1.2m tent floor, leaving little room to reach round it. Two GT424 kits are the alternative.

Nutriculture Gro-Tank GT424
£98.95
A slim channel for a narrow tent or shelf; two sit side by side in a 1.2 x 1.2m tent.
- 3 to 5 plants
- 101 x 48.5 x 20.5cm
- 45-litre tank
- No timer needed
- Two kits mean two tanks, so two crops can run on different feeds
- An air line on the pump adds oxygen to the solution on every pass
Know before you buyThe tray bolts to the tank, so it is slower to set up and strip down than the GT090 or GT205.

Nutriculture Gro-Tank GT604
£123.99
A long, narrow channel that runs down one side of a 2.4 x 1.2m tent, a bench or a grow room.
- 5 to 8 plants
- 152.5 x 48.5 x 19cm
- 60-litre tank
- No timer needed
- Just 19cm high, leaving the height of the room to the plants
- One tank of solution goes round again and again, so very little feed is wasted
Know before you buyIt needs more than 1.5m of floor, so it will not fit a 1.2m or 1.5m tent. Check daily that the film reaches the far end.

Nutriculture NFT Spreader Mat
From £2.90 100ft roll £7.75
Fresh mat for every crop keeps the film even across the tray, so new roots never land on a dry strip.
- 20cm or 40cm wide
- 25ft to 500m rolls
- Cut to fit
- Any flat NFT tray
- Stops the solution racing down one line of the tray and leaving dry strips
- The spare matting for Gro-Tank systems
Know before you buyRoots grow into the fibres and old mat holds root debris, so it cannot be reused. Lay fresh mat for each crop.

Plant counts follow Nutriculture’s rule of about one plant per square foot. Compact crops such as lettuce and herbs can go closer.

How to choose
- Measure the floor first. A 1m tent takes the GT090, a 1.2m tent the GT100 or two GT424s and a 2.4m tent the GT604.
- Plant only well-rooted blocks. Start plants in rockwool blocks and move them on once white roots show through the outside. Remove any wrap first.
- Feed for a recirculating tank. Use a hydro nutrient made for systems that reuse the solution, such as Canna Aqua Vega and Flores, and hold the pH your kit gives: 5.5 to 6.5 across these.
- Keep the tank warm and oxygenated. Below 17°C, a tank heater brings it to about 18°C. A Hailea ACO air pump and stone add oxygen in a warm room.
- Check the pump every day. There is no medium to hold water, so a stopped pump or blocked inlet can leave roots drying within hours on a warm day. Keep a spare to hand.

Quick answers
How does an NFT system work?
A pump in the tank lifts nutrient solution to the head of the tray. It runs as a shallow film across the spreader mat and over the bare roots, then drains back to the tank to go round again. The pump runs 24 hours a day, so there is no timer to set.
How many plants fit in an NFT kit?
Nutriculture work on about one plant per square foot: 1 to 3 on the GT205, 2 to 5 on the GT090 and up to 9 on the GT100. Lettuce and herbs can go closer; large, long-season plants need more room.
What grows well in NFT?
Leafy greens, herbs, strawberries, and fruiting crops such as tomatoes and peppers, as long as they go in well rooted. Very big, long-season plants grow root mats that can dam the channel, so NFT suits smaller and quicker crops best.
What spares should I keep for an NFT system?
Spreader mat for every crop and a spare pump. If a Gro-Tank reservoir cracks, replacement tanks (GT100, GT901) are sold on their own.
