Best EC and TDS meters: Aqua Master Tools, Bluelab, Milwaukee and AC Infinity meters

Best EC and TDS Meters: 2026 Buying Guide

Buy an EC meter with automatic temperature compensation that reads in the same units as your feed chart. A TDS meter is the same thing showing ppm, so every meter here does both jobs. For most growers that is the Bluelab EC Pen; on a budget, the Grow Gadgets EC Tester does the basic job for £14.49.

The best EC and TDS meters

1 Best overall Bluelab EC Pen

Bluelab EC Pen

£75.95

The pen most growers should buy: accurate, waterproof, and it reads in whatever units your feed chart uses.

  • ±0.1 EC accuracy
  • EC, CF and both ppm scales
  • Floats
  • Factory calibrated
  • Automatic temperature compensation, so warm and cold mixes read true
  • Backlit screen and a hold button for reading away from the tank
  • About 350 hours from one AAA battery

Know before you buyIt switches itself off after 4 minutes, and it costs five times the budget pick.

2 Best budget Grow Gadgets EC Tester

Grow Gadgets EC Tester

£14.49

The cheapest way to stop mixing feed by guesswork and start mixing to a number.

  • Digital EC display
  • Up to 700 hours’ battery
  • Screwdriver calibration
  • Carry case included
  • Set it against a known solution when the reading drifts
  • Tough plastic body for a wet grow room

Know before you buyA strength check rather than a precision instrument. It shows EC only, so test at a similar water temperature each time.

3 Best value Milwaukee C66

Milwaukee C66

£34.95

The cheapest pen here with proper specs: temperature compensation, IP65 and a replaceable probe.

  • 0.00–10.00 mS/cm
  • ±2% full scale
  • IP65 waterproof
  • Replaceable electrode
  • Reads to 0.01 mS/cm
  • Automatic temperature compensation from 5 to 50°C
  • One-point calibration at 1413 µS/cm with a small trimmer

Know before you buyIt reads mS/cm only, so multiply by 500 or 700 if your feed chart is in ppm.

4 Best truncheon Bluelab Nutrient Truncheon

Bluelab Nutrient Truncheon

£84.49

Stir the tank and read it in one movement, with nothing to calibrate, ever.

  • 0.2–3.6 EC
  • ±0.1 EC accuracy
  • LED scale: EC, CF, ppm
  • 5-year warranty
  • Factory calibrated for life
  • Switches on by itself when the probe touches liquid
  • Fully waterproof, with automatic temperature compensation

Know before you buyThe range stops at 3.6 EC and it shows a lit LED, not a number. Long and awkward for a small watering can.

5 Best for coco and rockwool Aqua Master Tools E300 Pro

Aqua Master Tools E300 Pro

£109.55

Push the probe into the slab or pot and read EC straight from the medium, with no run-off to collect.

  • 0.0–19.9 mS/cm
  • 90cm probe cord
  • Root-zone temperature
  • IP67 electrode
  • Shows root-zone temperature to ±0.5°C as well
  • Automatic one-point calibration at 1.4 EC
  • Replaceable electrode for repeated use

Know before you buyNot the tool for mixing a tank. Readings change with how wet the medium is, so test at the same point after watering.

How to choose

  • Match the units. If your feed chart is in ppm, check which scale: EC 1.4 reads 700 on the 500 scale and 980 on the 700 scale.
  • Get temperature compensation. Warm water reads higher than cold at the same strength, so a meter without it misleads you.
  • Pen or truncheon? A pen goes anywhere and reads stronger solutions; a truncheon stirs and reads a tank in one go.
  • Read EC before pH. Mix everything, set the strength, then correct pH last.
  • Rinse after every use. Dried feed on the probe is the commonest reason a good meter starts reading wrong.

Quick answers

What is the difference between EC, TDS and ppm?

They are the same measurement in different units. EC is how well the solution conducts electricity, which rises as more feed dissolves. A TDS or ppm reading is EC multiplied by a conversion factor, and CF is EC multiplied by ten.

Which ppm scale should I use, 500 or 700?

Whichever your feed chart uses. EC 1.4 reads 700 ppm on the 500 scale and 980 ppm on the 700 scale, so mixing to one with a meter set to the other gives the wrong strength.

Do EC meters need calibrating?

Some do and some do not. The Bluelab pen and truncheon are factory calibrated; others calibrate against a standard solution such as Bluelab 2.77 EC. Either way, clean the probe and check it against a standard about once a month.

What EC should my feed be?

Start from the chart for the nutrient you use and adjust to how the plants respond. Seedlings and fresh cuttings need a much weaker feed than established plants.
