What Size Pot Do Your Plants Need? The Complete Sizing Guide

Pot size is the cheapest decision in the whole grow and one of the easiest to get wrong. Too small and the plant runs out of root room, dries out twice a day and stalls just as it should be accelerating. Too big and the medium sits wet around a tiny root ball, oxygen drops, and everything slows down for a fortnight. Get the ladder of pot sizes right and the plant never once has to wait for you. This guide covers what size to start in, when to pot on, how big the final pot should be for your space, and whether plastic, fabric or an air-pot is the right call.
What a pot actually does, and why the size changes everything
A pot is doing three jobs at once, and they pull against each other. It holds a volume of medium for roots to colonise. It holds a reservoir of water and dissolved feed between waterings. And it holds air — because roots respire, and a root sitting in waterlogged medium with no oxygen stops working within hours.
Change the litres and you change all three at once. That is why pot size feels like such a small decision and behaves like such a large one.
A pot that is too small fails on the reservoir. The medium dries out in hours rather than days, so the plant swings between soaked and thirsty several times a day, and the nutrient concentration swings with it — you water at a sensible strength, most of the water leaves, and what stays behind gets more concentrated every cycle. Roots hit the wall, circle round the inside and strangle themselves into a dense mat. Growth flattens off. People almost always blame the feed.
A pot that is too big fails on the air. A small root ball in twenty litres of wet medium can only drink from the few litres it occupies. The rest stays saturated for days, goes anaerobic, and turns into exactly the environment root rot likes. The plant does not die — it just sits there doing nothing for two or three weeks while the pot slowly dries out, which is why "potting up straight into the final pot to save time" so often costs more time than it saves.
This is the same for everything you grow
Tomatoes, chillies, cucumbers, herbs, strawberries, houseplants — the physics does not care what the plant is. Root volume, water reservoir and air. The numbers below shift a little with how thirsty a species is and how long you intend to grow it for, but the ladder and the reasoning are identical whatever is in the pot.
The pot ladder: what to use at each stage
The reliable approach is to move up in steps, each roughly two to three times the previous volume, and to let the roots decide when. A plant that has just filled its pot with roots and is then given three times the space grows away almost immediately; the same plant dropped straight into twenty litres sulks.

You can skip the second step if you are short on time or bench space, going 1L straight to 11L, and most people get away with it. What you cannot sensibly do is go from a propagation plug into a final pot — that is the biggest jump in the ladder and the one most likely to produce a three-week stall.

Sizing the final pot for your space
The final pot is not really a decision about the plant — it is a decision about the floor. A square metre of growing space holds a fixed amount of medium before the pots stop fitting, so the real question is how you want to divide that space up: a few large plants in big pots, or more plants in smaller ones.
Both work. Fewer, larger pots means less watering, more buffer against mistakes and a longer run-up before the canopy fills. More, smaller pots fills the space faster and fails more gracefully if one plant goes wrong, at the cost of watering more often.

A rough rule if you are working outside a tent
Allow roughly four to five litres of pot for every 30cm of finished plant height, then round up to the nearest size you can actually buy. It is a rule of thumb rather than a law, but it lands close for most crops and it stops the two classic errors — a metre-tall plant in a 6L pot, or a 30cm herb in 20 litres of permanently damp medium.

Square pots tile. In a tent that matters more than it sounds — four 11L squares sit flat against each other in a metre square with no wasted corners, where four round pots of the same volume leave gaps you cannot use. Round pots are easier to lift, easier to clean and slightly kinder to roots on the turn. For a tight space, square wins on packing alone.
Plastic, fabric or air-pot?
All three hold the same litres. What differs is what happens when a root reaches the wall.
Solid plastic gives the root nowhere to go, so it turns and follows the wall round. Left long enough that becomes a dense circling mat that never fully sorts itself out, even after potting on. Plastic also holds moisture longest, which is an advantage if you are away from the tent for a day and a liability if you tend to overwater. It is cheap, stackable and washes clean for the next crop.
Fabric pots breathe through the sidewall. A root tip that reaches the edge meets dry air, stops extending and branches behind itself instead — the same effect as pinching a shoot. The result is a fibrous root ball that uses the whole volume rather than just the outside of it. The trade-off is that fabric dries out faster from every surface, not just the top, so you water more often and the pot cools itself as it evaporates. Many growers go one size up in fabric compared with plastic to buy back some of that lost reservoir.
Air-pots take the same idea further with a perforated plastic wall that pushes roots out towards open holes. They air-prune hard and produce the densest root mass of the three, but they need the most watering of all and they are the fiddliest to fill. They earn their keep where root volume is the limiting factor and you are around to water.
The honest summary
Plastic if you water every two or three days. Fabric if you water daily and want the better root ball. Air-pot if you water daily, want the best root ball, and do not mind the faff. None of the three will rescue a pot that is the wrong size — the litres matter far more than the material.

When to pot on — and how to do it without setting the plant back
Do not pot on to a calendar. Pot on when the roots tell you to, and there are three reliable signals.
The pot dries out too fast. This is the best single indicator and it needs no digging. Lift the pot the day after watering, then again two days later. When a pot that used to stay heavy for three days is light in one, the root mass has outgrown the reservoir.
Roots at the drainage holes. White tips poking out of the base mean the root ball has reached the bottom and is looking for somewhere else to go.
The root ball holds its shape. Slide the plant out — support the stem between two fingers, turn the pot over, tap the rim. If the medium falls apart, it is too early; put it back. If it lifts out as a solid block laced with white roots, it is ready. If it lifts out as a solid block with roots visibly circling the outside, it is slightly overdue.
The five-minute method
Water lightly the day before so the root ball holds together but is not sodden. Part-fill the new pot so the old root ball will sit at the same depth as before, never deeper. Slide the plant out and leave the root ball alone unless roots are visibly circling, in which case tease the outer few gently loose. Backfill around it loosely — do not compact it, you are filling it with air as much as medium. Water it in until you see a little run-off, and leave it alone for 24 hours. Growth usually resumes within two or three days.
How much medium will you actually need?
Pot volumes are stated as the volume to the rim, and nobody fills to the rim, so a nominal 11L pot takes something closer to 9 or 10 litres in practice. Work in whole bags and buy one more than the arithmetic says: a 50L bag comfortably fills four 11L pots, or two 20L pots, or roughly two dozen 1L pots.
The medium also changes how the pot behaves. Coco holds a lot of water and drains fast, which is why it suits fabric pots and frequent feeding — the detail is in our guide to feeding in coco. Soil holds less water but buffers chemistry far better, so it forgives a bigger pot. Adding perlite to either — usually somewhere between 10% and 30% by volume — opens the mix up and makes an oversized pot considerably less risky. Whatever you fill it with, check the pH of what you pour through it.

Catching the run-off
Every pot needs somewhere for the water to go. Watering to a little run-off is how you keep salts from building up in the medium, which means roughly 10% to 20% of what you pour in comes straight back out of the bottom — and it has to be caught, or it sits on the tent floor and breeds fungus gnats.
Individual saucers are the cheapest answer and work well for one or two plants. For a full tent, a single large tray under all the pots is easier to empty, easier to clean and stops you missing one. Size the saucer to the pot, not to the plant: a 25cm saucer suits an 11L pot, and an 18L pot wants 29cm or more.

Quick answers
Can I just plant straight into the final pot and skip the small ones?
You can, and it sometimes works, but it is the least reliable option. A seedling or fresh cutting has a root ball of a few centimetres; drop it into 18 litres of wet medium and only the small volume around the roots gets used, while the rest stays saturated for days. That is slow to dry, low in oxygen, and exactly the condition root rot and fungus gnats prefer. If you must do it, use a very free-draining mix with plenty of perlite, water only a small circle around the stem to begin with, and expect the first fortnight to be slower than it would have been.
How do I know when a plant is root-bound?
Three signs, in increasing order of urgency. First, the pot dries out much faster than it used to — a pot that stayed heavy for three days is now light in one. Second, white root tips appear at the drainage holes. Third, when you slide the plant out the root ball holds together as a solid block with roots visibly circling the outside. The first sign is the one to act on; by the third you are already a week or two late and the plant has probably slowed down.
Are fabric pots actually better than plastic?
For root quality, yes — the sidewall lets air in, so root tips stop at the edge and branch behind themselves instead of circling. You end up with a fibrous root ball that uses the whole volume. The cost is water: fabric evaporates from every surface, so pots dry out considerably faster and need watering more often, and they cool themselves as they evaporate, which is a help in summer and a nuisance in a cold room. If you water daily anyway, fabric is the better pot. If you water every three days, plastic is more forgiving.
What size pot for one plant in a 1m x 1m tent?
If you are growing a single plant in a square metre, 18 to 20 litres is the sensible ceiling and 15L is perfectly workable. Going much larger rarely gains anything, because a single root system takes a long time to colonise the extra volume and the medium stays wet in the meantime. Most people get a better result from that square metre by running two to four plants in 11 litres each, which fills the canopy faster and spreads the risk.
How much medium does a 50L bag actually fill?
Roughly four 11L pots, two 20L pots, or about two dozen 1L pots. Pot volumes are measured to the rim and nobody fills to the rim, so an 11L pot takes closer to 9 or 10 litres in practice — which is why the arithmetic usually works out slightly in your favour. Buy one more bag than you calculate: part-filling a pot because you ran out is a false economy, and coco and soil both keep indefinitely if stored dry.
Should I size fabric pots differently from plastic?
Yes, slightly. Because fabric loses water from the sidewall as well as the surface, a fabric pot behaves like a smaller plastic one in terms of how long it holds a reservoir. Going one step up — a 16L fabric pot where you would have used an 11L plastic — restores roughly the same watering interval while keeping the better root structure. If you are on an automated feed system that waters several times a day, this matters much less and you can size them like for like.
Can I reuse pots between crops?
Plastic pots and saucers, yes — they wash and reuse indefinitely, and it is worth doing properly rather than quickly, because old root debris and salt deposits carry pests and disease from one crop to the next. Scrub them out with hot water, rinse thoroughly and let them dry fully before refilling. Fabric pots can be reused too but need more effort: shake out the old medium, wash them inside out, and replace them once the fabric starts to break down or the roots have grown into the weave. Air-pots come apart flat, which makes them the easiest of the three to clean.
