Best pH Meters for Hydroponics: 2026 Buying Guide
Share
For most hydroponic growers, the right pH meter is a waterproof pen with temperature compensation, two-point calibration and a replaceable probe. That is the Aqua Master Tools P50 Pro2. On a tight budget, the £18.90 Digital pH Meter calibrates and does the job.
The best pH meters
1. Aqua Master Tools P50 Pro2
£53.95
Everything a reservoir pen needs at a sensible price: temperature compensation, IP67 and automatic calibration.
- ±0.1 pH
- Auto 2-point calibration
- ATC 0–50°C
- IP67
- Replaceable electrode, so the pen outlives its probe
- Arrives calibrated, with a 30-day calibration reminder
- Reads pH and temperature together
Know before you buyAt 230mm and 132g it is chunkier than most pens, and it switches itself off after 8 minutes.

4. VIVOSUN AeroLab P30
£69.49
The most precise pen here at ±0.01 pH, and it floats if you drop it in the tank.
- ±0.01 pH
- Auto 1, 2 or 3-point calibration
- ATC 0–50°C
- IP67, floats
- Recognises both common buffer sets
- Replaceable double-junction probe
- Buffer sachets, measuring cup and batteries in the box
Know before you buyThe second decimal only counts with careful calibration and fresh buffer. It will not change how you feed.

5. Bluelab pH PenPlus
£127.99
A pen you repair rather than replace: when the probe wears out, you screw in a new one.
- ±0.1 pH
- Replaceable probe
- IP68
- pH and temperature
- Two-point calibration with a 30-day reminder
- Calibration and KCl storage sachets in the box
- Two-year warranty, six months on the probe
Know before you buyRated for solutions of 0.2 EC and above, so it is not the tool for checking pure RO water.

How to choose
- Where will you test? A watering can once or twice a week: a budget pen is fine. A reservoir every day: a waterproof pen with temperature compensation.
- How long will you keep it? A replaceable probe pays for itself the first time the glass wears out.
- pH and EC at every feed? A combo meter saves time; separate pens cost less.
- Away for days at a time? Only a monitor with alarms tells you when something goes wrong.
- Budget for buffers. Every pH meter needs pH 7 and pH 4 buffer and KCl storage solution.
Where to aim the number is in pH explained. Testing soil or coco itself? Use a substrate probe such as the Aqua Master Tools S300 Pro2.
Quick answers
How accurate does a pH meter need to be?
±0.1 pH is enough for feeding. The hydro target band is about half a point wide, so a calibrated ±0.1 pen keeps you inside it. Calibration matters far more than the rated figure.
Do I need a pH meter with temperature compensation?
If you read a reservoir, yes. pH readings shift with the temperature of the solution, and automatic temperature compensation corrects for it. Without it, take readings at roughly the temperature you feed at.
How often should I calibrate a pH meter?
Monthly suits most home growers, and weekly if you read a reservoir every day. Use two points, pH 7.0 then pH 4.0, with fresh buffer, and always calibrate after fitting a new probe.
Can I use a pH pen to test soil?
Not directly. A pen measures liquids, so in soil or coco you test the run-off or a mix of medium and water. To read the medium itself, use a probe built for it, such as the Aqua Master Tools S300 Pro2.
