Grow Room Timers and Contactors: How to Switch Your Lights Safely

A grow light asks more of a switch than almost anything else in a house. It draws a hard surge of current at the instant it comes on, it does it again every single day without fail, and it will keep doing it for years. A £6 plug-in timer is not built for that, and when it fails it usually fails stuck — either leaving the lights on around the clock or leaving the room in darkness for a day before anyone notices. This guide covers what actually goes wrong, when you need a contactor instead of a timer, how to size one, and why the fans must never share the switched supply.
Why cheap timers burn out on grow lights
Switch on a kettle and it draws its rated current more or less immediately. Switch on a lighting ballast and something different happens: for a fraction of a second it pulls several times its running current while the lamp strikes and the circuit settles. That short spike is called inrush, and it is invisible — the light looks like it just came on.
Inside the timer, it is not invisible at all. Every time the contacts close on that surge they draw a tiny arc, and the arc removes a little metal from the contact face. Do it once and nothing happens. Do it 365 times a year for three years and the faces pit, then roughen, then start to heat up because a rough contact has more resistance than a smooth one. Heat softens them further, and eventually two things can happen: the contacts weld themselves shut, or they get hot enough to be a genuine fire risk.
Welded contacts are the failure mode that costs you the crop, because the timer keeps ticking and looks entirely normal — the dial turns, the display counts down — while the lights simply never go off. Nobody spots it until the plants do something strange, and by then the schedule has been broken for days.
This is the same for anything you grow under lights
Tomatoes, chillies, salads, herbs, strawberries, houseplants, seedlings on a windowsill in February — the electrical problem has nothing to do with the plant. Any grower running supplementary lighting on a daily schedule is asking one switch to make thousands of switching operations under surge, and the answer is the same in every case.
What a contactor actually is
A contactor is a heavy-duty relay in a box. Inside it there is an electromagnet — the coil — and a set of large, properly rated contacts. Energise the coil and the contacts slam closed; cut the coil and a spring pulls them apart. That is the whole idea.
What makes it useful is the division of labour. The timer no longer switches the lights. It switches the coil, which draws a trivial amount of current, so the timer's little contacts have nothing to arc against and last more or less indefinitely. The lighting current goes through the contactor's contacts instead, which are sized for it and designed to open and close under load thousands of times.
In practice that means one of two arrangements. Either you buy a contactor and plug your own timer into it — the Eco Technics Power Star works this way, and it is worth noting the timer is not supplied — or you buy a unit with a timer already built in and wired to the coil, which is what a contactor board or a metal multi-way contactor gives you.
Ratings, in the only terms that matter
Manufacturers state contactor capacity in watts or in lights. The Eco Technics 2-way is rated 2kW — two 600W lights or one 1000W; the 4-way is 3kW, covering four 400W, four 600W or three 1000W. Add up every fixture you intend to hang off it, including anything you might add next year, and stay comfortably inside the number. Sizing to exactly your current load leaves you nothing when you add a light.

Sizing the switching to your room
There is no cleverness required here. Count the lights, add the watts, and pick from the ladder. The only decision with any nuance in it is where you stop using a plug-in timer, and the honest answer is at one light — a single 600W ballast on a properly rated heavy-duty timer is fine, and two is already asking for trouble.

Boards are where a larger room ends up, and they are less of a step up in price than people expect. A contactor board puts a genuine 24-hour Grasslin timer, an integrated contactor and a bank of sockets on one wall-mounted unit, in sizes from six timed sockets up to twenty-four. The larger ones carry a 120A-rated connector block, which is comfortably overrated for the job — exactly what you want in something that switches every day for years.
Have the wiring done properly
Contactor boards and hard-wired switching must be installed by a qualified electrician, to current regulations. Plug-in timers and plug-in contactors are a different matter and need no more than a socket, but anything that gets fixed to a wall and wired in is not a job to improvise. Mount it dry, off the floor, clear of spray and standing water, and route the cables so a loose connection is easy to spot later.

Which timer to actually buy
Once the load is off the timer's shoulders, choosing one becomes a question of resolution and convenience rather than survival.
Mechanical segmental timers are the cheapest and, in one specific way, the most robust: there is nothing to reprogram after a power cut, because the schedule is physically set by tabs around a dial. You lose fine control — most switch in 15-minute steps — and the dial can drift by a few minutes over weeks. For switching a contactor coil or running a circulation fan, that is completely adequate.
Digital timers hold an exact schedule to the minute and will run several on/off cycles a day, which matters the moment you want to stage anything. Better ones keep the programme through a power cut on a small internal battery. If you are also timing irrigation, resolution becomes the whole story: a mechanical timer's shortest possible feed is fifteen minutes, which for most drip systems means a soaked pot. A second-level timer solves a problem a light timer never has to think about — twenty seconds on, forty seconds off is a perfectly ordinary irrigation ask and a mechanical dial simply cannot express it.

The sockets that must never switch off
This is the part people get wrong even after they have bought the right contactor. Extraction and circulation must keep running when the lights go off. Plug the fans into the timed sockets and every night the room loses its air movement at exactly the moment the temperature drops, humidity climbs and condensation starts to form on cold surfaces. You spend the dark period building the conditions that cause mould, then blow them away again in the morning.
That is why a decent contactor board separates its outlets into timed sockets for the lights and auxiliary sockets that stay live around the clock. Fans, controllers, pumps and dehumidifiers go on the permanent side. Only the lights go on the switched side. Some boards add a dedicated heater output for rooms that need night-time heat.

One more thing that belongs on the permanent supply
If you need to look at anything during the dark period, do not switch the main light back on and do not use a white torch — light during the dark hours can disturb the photoperiod response of anything sensitive to day length. A green work light lets you see without breaking the dark period, and it costs less than a bag of coco.

When on and off is not enough
Everything so far has been about a switch: the light is on, or it is off. Modern fixtures with a 0-10V control port can do more than that, and a dimming controller is what unlocks it.
Three things become possible. Intensity control — you set output as a percentage rather than moving the fixture up and down, which is far easier than re-hanging a light every ten days. Ramping — sunrise and sunset modes raise and lower output gradually instead of slamming from nothing to full, which is gentler on plants and on the electrical supply. And zones, so two areas of a room can run different schedules and different intensities from one box.
Several also read temperature and pull output back automatically when the canopy gets too hot — the Telos controller takes a canopy probe and will auto-dim or shut down above a set ceiling, which is a useful safety net in a UK summer. Check the port before you buy the controller
Dimming controllers are not universal. Some drive any 0-10V fixture from any manufacturer; others only work with their own brand's lights, and the connectors differ — RJ11, RJ45 and M-12 3-pin all appear. Look at what is on the back of your fixture first, then buy the controller that matches it. A brand-specific controller bought for a mixed room is money spent for nothing.

Five mistakes that kill timers
Daisy-chaining timers. Plugging a timer into another timer, or a four-way adaptor full of ballasts into one timer, concentrates every light's inrush into a single set of contacts. It is the fastest way to weld one shut.
Sizing to today's load exactly. A 2kW contactor running exactly 2kW has no headroom, and the first extra fixture takes it over. Buy the next size up; the difference is usually under ten pounds.
Putting the fans on the timed side. Covered above, and worth repeating because it is so common. Extraction runs around the clock.
Mounting it on the floor. Water finds the floor. So does spilled nutrient solution. Every piece of switching gear should be on a wall, dry, and clear of anything that sprays.
Never checking it. Contacts degrade slowly, so the warning signs come early if you look: a timer that feels warm, a faint buzzing or clicking that was not there before, scorch marks or discolouration around a plug, or a lighting-on time that has crept by a few minutes. Any of those means replace it now, not after it fails.
The five-minute check, once a month
Stand in the room at the moment the lights are due to switch. Confirm they come on within a minute of the time you set. Put the back of your hand near the timer and any plug tops — they should be cool. Look for browning around the pins. Confirm the fans are still running when the lights go off. That is the whole inspection, and it catches almost everything before it becomes a problem.
Quick answers
Do I need a contactor for a single 600W light?
No, provided the timer is genuinely rated for one ballast. A heavy-duty timer built for a single 600W light will handle the strike surge day after day without complaint. What you must not do is plug a second light into it, or use a domestic plug-in timer bought for a table lamp — those are rated for resistive loads and will not survive the repeated inrush of a lighting ballast for long.
Do LED grow lights need a contactor too?
They draw far less current than an equivalent HID setup and many LED fixtures have soft-start drivers, so a single fixture on a decent timer is usually fine. But LED drivers still have their own inrush at switch-on, and it stacks: several fixtures switching together can produce a surge big enough to weld a small timer or even trip a breaker. Once you are running a bank of LEDs, switch them through a contactor or a proper lighting controller exactly as you would with HID.
Why did my timer stick with the lights on?
Almost certainly welded contacts. Each switch-on under surge erodes a little metal from the contact faces; eventually one closure heats them enough that they fuse together and never open again. The timer's clock keeps running and the display looks perfectly normal, which is why it goes unnoticed. Replace the timer rather than trying to free it, and move the load onto a contactor so it does not happen again.
Can I run my fans through the same timer as the lights?
You can, but you should not. Extraction and circulation need to run through the dark period — that is when a closed room cools, humidity climbs and condensation forms on cold surfaces. Fans belong on a permanent supply, either straight into a wall socket or into the always-on auxiliary sockets on a contactor board. Only lights go on the switched outlets.
What happens to my schedule after a power cut?
It depends on the timer. A mechanical segmental timer loses exactly as much time as the power was out and then carries on, so a two-hour cut leaves your cycle running two hours late until you reset the dial. A digital timer without battery backup typically resets to zero and needs reprogramming. Better digital timers hold the programme and the clock on a small internal battery, which is worth paying a few pounds for if your supply is unreliable.
Is a contactor board worth it for a small tent?
For one or two lights, no — a heavy-duty timer or a small plug-in contactor does the job for a fraction of the price and needs no installation. Boards start to make sense from around six lights, or sooner if you want the always-on auxiliary sockets and the tidiness of one wall-mounted unit instead of a nest of adaptors. Remember a board is wired in, so factor in an electrician.
How do I know what my total load is?
Add up the wattage printed on every fixture you intend to run from the unit — that is the ballast rating for HID, or the fixture's stated power draw for LED. Ignore the lamp wattage if the ballast is rated higher. Then compare against the contactor's rating in watts, and against the amp rating if one is given; a 13A device on a UK supply is roughly 3kW. Leave at least 20% spare, and remember every light on that circuit strikes at once.
