Best Propagation Lights for Seedlings and Cuttings: 2026 Buying Guide
Share
Seedlings and cuttings need soft, even light close above them, not a full-power grow light. For one or two trays, the Root!T LED bar is the pick; for a shelf, SunBlaster strips in the length you need; on a tight budget, the Gorilla 12W strip. Hang it 15–30cm above the tray and run it 16–18 hours a day.

How to choose
- Count the trays and measure the shelf. One 50–60cm bar per standard tray is a sound start; link more as you need them.
- Strips for trays, a panel for a tent. A small dimmable panel makes sense where plants will grow on under the same light.
- Go for cool white or blue-weighted light. It keeps young plants short and sturdy.
- Give it 15–30cm of height. If seedlings stretch, lower it; if the tips go pale, raise it.
- Put it on a timer. A regular 16–18 hour day matters more than extra brightness.
Light is one part of it. Our propagator guide covers heat and humidity, and light height and PPFD has the light levels for every stage.
Quick answers
How far should a propagation light be from seedlings?
Usually 15–30cm. Omega recommends 20–30cm for its clone strips and Gorilla 15–30cm for its 12W strip. If seedlings stretch, lower it; if the tips go pale, raise it.
How many hours of light do seedlings and cuttings need?
A regular 16–18 hours a day suits most seedlings and cuttings. A timer keeps it consistent.
Can I use my main grow light for seedlings?
Yes, if it dims: turn it well down, or raise it high above the plants. Full power over fresh cuttings will wilt them, because they have no roots yet to replace the water they lose.
Do propagation lights need to be full spectrum?
No. Cool white light of 6400–6500K is the standard for seedlings and cuttings and keeps growth compact. A full-spectrum light works too, but there is no need to pay extra for it at this stage.
