Best Rooting Gels and Cloning Products: 2026 Buying Guide
Share
For most cuttings, buy Clonex Rooting Gel: IBA rooting hormone in a thick gel that seals the cut. Root!T is the cheapest gel at £4.49, and Plagron NextGen is hormone-free. A sharp blade, a humid lid and gentle warmth matter as much as the gel, so they are covered below too.

How to choose
- Starting from nothing? Buy the kit and add a light.
- Use a sharp, clean blade. A sterile scalpel at £0.85 slices the stem instead of crushing it.
- Hormone or hormone-free? Both seal the cut. Clonex supplies a rooting hormone; NextGen prompts the plant’s own response.
- Warm the roots. Around 22–25°C at the cube makes the biggest difference, and a heat mat gets you there in a cool room.
- Keep it humid, not wet. A misted lid and a damp cube, never a cube sitting in water.

Quick answers
Do I need rooting gel to take cuttings?
Not always: plenty of easy plants root without it. A gel seals the cut and, if it contains a hormone, makes results more consistent on plants that are slower to root.
Is gel better than rooting powder?
For cuttings in cubes and plugs, most growers prefer gel, because it clings to the stem and stays on when you push the cutting in and water it.
What is the difference between hormone and hormone-free gel?
A hormone gel such as Clonex contains IBA, which signals the stem to form roots. A hormone-free gel such as Plagron NextGen uses a biostimulant to prompt the plant’s own rooting response. Both seal the cut.
How should I store rooting gel?
Sealed and, for Clonex, in the fridge. Decant a little for each session and throw away what is left, so the bottle never gets contaminated.
