Best under-canopy LED lights: Faven, ThinkGrow, Elite and Nanolux bars compared on output, stands and price

Best Under-Canopy LED Lights: 2026 Buying Guide

Under-canopy bars sit low between the rows and light the lower leaves that the main light stops reaching once a dense canopy fills in, so tall, leafy plants grow more evenly from top to bottom. For a 1.2 × 1.2 m tent, the Faven R8 4x4 Kit is the complete answer: two bars, stands and a dimmer in one box. For the most light per watt, take the Aether 2-bar kit; on a budget, one Elite 150W bar with its own stands.

How to choose and set up

  • Run one bar per row of plants. Faven size their kits at two bars per 1.2 × 1.2 m, and a bar of about 1.2 m spans one tent-width row.
  • Set it just above the pots. The bar belongs above the rim of the pot or slab, so the light reaches the lowest leaves rather than the growing medium.
  • Switch on once the canopy has filled in. Start dimmed, at around 40%, and bring the bars up to full over two to three weeks, on the same timer as your main light.
  • Aim for 500–800 µmol/m²/s in the lower half of the plant, Faven's target, and clear any leaves touching or shading the bars.
  • Expect plants to drink more. Extra light raises demand: Faven suggest about 10–15% more water and an EC around 10% higher, adjusted to how the plants respond.

Quick answers

Why light the lower canopy?

Light from overhead loses intensity quickly as it passes down through the leaves, so the lower part of a dense plant gets a fraction of the light at the top and lags behind. A bar between the rows lights those lower leaves directly, for more even growth from top to bottom without pushing the main light harder.

Which plants benefit?

Any tall, leafy crop that shades itself once it fills out: tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and chillies trained up strings or canes, and dense flowering plants. Short, open crops such as lettuce and herbs get enough from the main light.

Does it replace my main light?

No. Under-canopy bars are a supplement, run alongside a full-spectrum overhead light and on the same schedule.

How high should the bars sit?

Just above the rim of the pots, under the lowest leaves. Faven's stands set 20, 25 or 30 cm and the Elite's tripods adjust from about 32 to 53 cm. Raise the bars as the lower canopy fills in, so no leaves touch them.
