Best Drip and Flood and Drain Systems: 2026 Buying Guide
Share
A drip system feeds each pot from the top through its own dripper; flood and drain fills each pot from below, then lets it drain back. For most tents the Origin Large is the drip system to buy, and the Origin Small is the cheapest way in. For flood and drain, start with the IWS Flood and Drain Standard 16mm and step up to the Pro Remote 25mm for a big room.

How to choose
- Drip or flood and drain? Drip suits coco, soil, rockwool or clay pebbles. Flood and drain wants a free-draining medium: clay pebbles, or pebbles with 20–40% coco so the pots flood less often.
- Tank under the tray, or a remote reservoir? Origin systems sit the pots on a tray over the tank, all in one compact unit. IWS systems use a remote reservoir: an IWS FlexiTank that stands beside the pots, joined by pipe, and holds up to 750 litres.
- Recirculate or run to waste? Origin and IWS flood and drain systems send the run-off back to the tank to use again. The Autodrain pumps it away, so every feed is fresh and the tank never drifts, at the cost of more water and feed.
- Budget for a timer and clean lines. Origin pumps need a timer, such as the 24hr Digital Timer. A cleaner such as House & Garden Drip Clean from the first fill stops drippers blocking.
- Fill flood and drain pots with clay pebbles. Canna Aqua Clay Pebbles hold plenty of air and little water, which is what the drain relies on.
How each system works, and what happens to each in a power cut, is in hydroponic systems explained. For sizing a pump, see how to choose a water pump.
Quick answers
What is the difference between drip and flood and drain?
A drip system feeds each pot from above through its own dripper, a few times a day on a timer. Flood and drain fills the pots from below to a set height, then lets them drain back to the tank. In both, fresh air is drawn into the root zone as the solution drains away.
What is a remote reservoir?
A tank that stands apart from the pots and is joined to them by pipe, like the FlexiTank on an IWS system. It can be far bigger than a tank under a tray, and is easy to reach for mixing and checking. In IWS names, “Remote” means the timer: the Standard Remote 16mm and Pro Remote 25mm have a timer that can be mounted outside the grow room.
Are Origin and Wilma the same system?
Yes. Nutriculture renamed its Wilma range Origin: the Origin Small was the Wilma Small 4, the Origin Large the Wilma Large 4 and the Origin XXL the Wilma XXL. Spare Origin tanks fit Wilma systems of the same size; check an older system against the tank dimensions first.
What spares should I keep?
For IWS, the matching tank pump (MJ1000 for 16mm, NJ3000 for 25mm Pro), the FlexiTank pump and pipework kit, and 25mm Pro Pipe for Pro systems.
