Special Mix is a pre-fertilised soil. It already carries enough feed to keep a young plant going on its own for the first weeks, which is why the base feed on this chart starts later than most growers expect.

Every figure is millilitres per one litre of water. A 10-litre can takes ten times these numbers, so 1.25ml here is 12.5ml in a 10-litre can.

Getting it right

• There is no base feed for the first two weeks. Gold Label state that with a nutrient rich substrate such as Special Mix, base nutrients are not required for the first two weeks. The soil is already carrying them. Grow 1 and Grow 2 are Ultra Roots, plus a single dose of Ultra Enzyme at Grow 1, and nothing else.
• The base then opens very low and climbs slowly. 0.25ml at Grow 3, then 0.5ml, 0.75ml and 1.0ml across Flower 1 to Flower 3, reaching a ceiling of 1.25ml at Flower 4 and Flower 5. That is the gentlest build of the Gold Label schedules — their coco chart tops out at 1.5ml and their hydro chart at 2.0ml.
• It is a start, change and stop schedule. Gold Label give a dose on the week it begins and then only say when it changes or stops, so a figure runs on unchanged in between. The grid above is that schedule filled in for every week.
• Flowering begins at Flower 1, the fourth week of the schedule. That is where Gold Label's own printed schedule drops from eighteen hours of light to twelve, so the three weeks before it are the Grow columns here and everything after is Flower. No dose has been moved to do it.
• A and B is one dose, twice. At 1.25ml that is 1.25ml of Soil A and 1.25ml of Soil B into the same litre. Add A, stir it in, then add B.
• Ultra Roots stays flat here. 0.5ml for all four of its weeks. On the Gold Label coco and hydro schedules it steps up to 1.0ml; on this one it does not move.
• Ultra PK starts later than on any other Gold Label chart. Flower 2 at 0.25ml, then 0.5ml from Flower 3 through to Flower 7, which matches the slower base build.
• Ultra Enzyme runs every other week — Grow 1, Grow 3, then Flower 2, Flower 4 and Flower 6 — and the last column is plain water with nothing added at all.

Common questions

Why is there no base feed in Grow 1 and Grow 2?

Because Special Mix is a rich soil and already holds what a young plant needs. Gold Label say base nutrients are not required for the first two weeks on a substrate like this, and start Soil A+B at 0.25ml at Grow 3.

Do I still water in those first two weeks?

Yes, as normal. The only things going into the can are Ultra Roots at 0.5ml, and Ultra Enzyme at 0.25ml at Grow 1.

I am using Special Mix Light — is this the right chart?

No. The light and perlite-free soils carry less feed, so Gold Label start the base at Grow 1 for those. See the Gold Label Light Mix feed chart.

Where does flowering begin on this chart?

At Flower 1, which is the fourth week of Gold Label's own schedule. That is the point where they switch from eighteen hours of light to twelve, so the three weeks before it are shown as Grow and everything after as Flower. The doses are unchanged.

Why is the base weaker than on the coco and hydro charts?

Soil holds and releases nutrient in a way that coco and clay pebbles do not, so less needs to go in through the can. This chart peaks at 1.25ml where the coco chart reaches 1.5ml and the hydro chart reaches 2.0ml.
